Knuckles bared white as fists clenched harder into themselves; why didn’t they care? Didn’t they understand that a man was missing? Had she been someone else, fists might have crashed against the glass that separated her from the police officer. Screams might have left her lips, her voice may have cried out until the only thing left was a raspy whisper. If she was someone else, they might have cared enough to look into her case. Or, at the very least, to look her in the eye as she spoke to them. [break][break]
She was too young to matter, a teenage doe-eyed girl in distress. Over what, exactly? Another teenager having gone missing, the fact that it was her brother didn’t seem to change their tune at all. ‘He’s probably just letting off some steam.’ ‘It hasn’t even been 48 hours.’ ‘You really worry too much, teenage boys are unpredictable.’ She’d heard it all before, plus numerous other comments that had left her mind as quickly as they had entered. Rubies shifted across the face of the officer as she forced her fists to loosen at her sides. He wouldn’t listen, he didn’t care.. but she had to try. [break][break]
“S-Sir,” she paused for a moment, half-expecting him to continue fixating on the computer screen to his left, but to her surprise, his gaze found hers. “I know I was just here a few hours ago, but it’s about to be 40 hours since I’ve seen my brother. I’d like to file a missing person’s report, and for a case to be opened about him.” The stammer that had first left her lips completely faded, a subtle confidence ringing through her words as brows pulled together, wrinkling her forehead. His digits moved upwards, rubbing the skin of his forehead as his gaze fell, shifting through the papers on his desk. It was a mess from what she could see from behind the glass that probably hadn’t been cleaned in months. Papers littered the desk in stacks that looked to be on the brink of falling over, but somehow it only took him a few moments to procure the one he was looking for. His fingers moved, slipping the paper through the small slit at the bottom of the glass. [break][break]
“Fill this out in 8 hours if you still haven’t heard from him, okay?” [break][break]
Minako nodded, hands quickly moving to grab the sheet and stuff it into her bag. 8 hours, okay. She could wait that long, or maybe Minato would turn up before then and everything would be alright. A dull pang in her stomach signaled the likelihood of that occurrence, but she attempted to ignore it as she turned and sat down on one of the metal chairs in the waiting area. Everything will be okay. The words repeated over and over, rattling around her mind like a prayer. Everything will be okay. It has to be. No matter how many times the assurance came, it didn’t stop droplets from forming in the corner of hues, nor did it stop them slipping down her cheeks and staining her skin. [break][break]
The Fool’s head bowed, falling towards her knees as her arms moved to cover her head. Without Minato, she had nothing; no, more than that… she was nothing. If it hadn’t been for him, when their mother died that fateful night, she would have been taken away into child services and never seen him again. Bounced from home to home, orphanage to orphanage, never truly feeling wanted. The pang in her stomach tightened its grip on her, a sudden wave of nausea falling over her body. [break][break]

| [attr="class","niknik2"] Cooperating with the police of Iwatodai wasn't any more rewarding than the last group of arrogant officers. Whether it be the fragile, vulnerable ego that they became a threat to or perhaps the butt to unwarranted jokes, it was all childish hogwash displayed by the law enforcement people were supposed to have faith in. As demeaning as some of the comments may be, the least Naoto could credit it with was the opportunity to grow thick skin. Perhaps ruthless taunting and harassment was necessary in the grand scheme of things, no matter how cruel it may be on the surface. [break][break] The day's work hadn't really made any notable progress other than climbing the walls that the men around them so casually left to keep them at a distance. What was it with grown men and looking down at fellow colleagues simply due to age? Were they some sort of threat simply because of that? Did that warrant playground manners for the sake of an ego boost? It was undoubtedly frustrating but the young Detective endured it for their own sake. This was more than just some silly job to them.[break][break] "He's just a kid, let 'em be." [break][break] Typical juvenile behavior befitting of illustrious authorities, these days but immature jabs was something they could handle. The beginning of any case was always difficult to swallow along with all of the petty nonsense but afterward, it usually made for an easier road. A helpful hint or two and suddenly the walls built to keep them out finally showed signs of crumbling.[break][break] On their way out, however, Naoto took notice to the faint sobs of a young girl sitting by her lonesome. While they knew it wasn't any of their business, nor did they want to pry necessarily, she wouldn't have any business being in a police station if it weren't some sort of emergency and looking so upset, they might as well ask. On that note, they turned on their heels to make careful steps in approaching her from the side, cap adjusted, briefcase in hand. "Excuse me, is there something I can help you with?" Their tone kept low and stern despite their inquisitive expression. Looking her over, they couldn't help but feel as though they had seen her somewhere before but the time and place escaped them. The sound of another voice ringing in her ears caused her form to jolt upwards, head rising from her lap and hands rushing to wipe away the tears that had stained her cheeks. At this point, there was no hiding the redness that puffed her features, digits rubbing at the raw skin only agitating it further. Ruby hues rose, finding the owner of the voice pretty instantly. They looked familiar, but not enough so that a name screamed out at her or a memory crept into her mind. Hues scanned over their face, taking in their androgynous features and coming up just as clueless as ever. Who were they? For a moment, the frustration of that question took her misery from her, but it only lasted a moment. Without a definitive answer in her mind, she settled on the idea that it must have been at school. Hands fell back to her lap, as the rubbing began to string the skin around her eyes. Surely, she didn’t have any more tears left to spill. [break][break]
“I-I’m sorry, do you work here? I was just…” [break][break]
She swallowed back, a hand moving absently to grab the fabric atop her chest as if to hold her heart in place when it felt as though it might crack into a million pieces. Could it do that? Shatter within her chest and take her from this world? It really felt like it could. Go on, tell them. Nobody can help if you refuse to ask for it. The voice of her dark-haired brother rang in her mind and of course, he was right. He was always right, ever since they were little. Minato had always been quiet, choosing carefully when to speak and what to say, the redhead had always had a hunch it was so planned out to ensure he was never wrong. Another sniffle sounded through her nose as she braced herself to continue her sentence. [break][break]
“I spoke to the officer at the window; my twin brother went missing… he uh, he’s only been gone for 40 hours but I know something is wrong. I can feel it in my soul, if you believe in stuff like that.” [break][break]
A ghost of a smile lifted her face for a moment, a false gesture of her usual polite nature that now she couldn’t bring herself to do. There wasn’t time for etiquette, there wasn’t time for anything other than searching for Minato. [break][break]
The Fool rose from the chair, moving across the room towards a box whose very last tissue sat at the bottom of the cardboard, completely out of sight to anyone not desperate. She delicately pulled the sheet out, raising it to her face and blowing her nose. God, she always hated how snotty of a crier she was, but that’s how things were, how they had always been. She tossed it into the bin before turning back to face the other. [break][break]

Dealing with emotional family members was by no means anything new but despite the experience, Naoto still couldn't find themselves to sympathize any better. It was almost a barrier between their emotions and their duty, one that they seldom ever crossed in the public eye. The blabbering young woman in front of them wasn't to be ignored, they had more pressing matters than to allow emotions to tamper with their train of thought.[break][break] "I'm cooperating with the police for a temporary amount of time in order to offer a bit of aid, so I suppose you could say that I do work around here for the time being." A temporary solution to a temporary problem, what an awful cycle. Caught in an endless loop of push and pull only to gain nothing from it all. To think that after shedding some light on a few vague clues would land them an ounce of respect among their partial colleagues but at times they felt that even their own satisfaction could be snatched from them in the end. Perhaps this time they'd gain a chance to focus on something without being heckled or demeaned. A solo assignment had always stuck better for them — and that's what they preferred to stick to. [break][break] Who were they trying to fool?[break][break] "Hm." Their chin sat comfortably between two digits, grip loose as they stood in thought. "Before he left, did he seem angry or upset? Does he often wander about alone? Where was the last place that you saw your brother and where did he say he was going?" As the thoughts brewed they wasted no time blurting them out for the other to answer, trying to grasp for basic clues before they jumped to any conclusions right off the bat. "Why don't you give me his name and I can find — " Name, had they even asked for her name? Clearing their throat, they swallowed back what little embarrassment their fumble caused. "While I'd appreciate the name of your brother, it may also be easier for me to know yours as well in case I have to contact you regarding any updates." A beat passed by before they assumed their own introduction with a flip of their badge, mostly for reassurance. Detective Shirogane Naoto. The name felt familiar, like she had heard it in passing or maybe on the news? She wasn’t sure, honestly there probably wasn’t any correlation and her desperate brain was trying to make connections to ground her, to connect her to this person so that maybe they really could find Minato. She swallowed back, several long blinks following before her brain could settle, the questions having been swarming around like bees after pollen. It had tried to take her back to the moment she realized he wasn’t coming home, to the last time she’d seen his face. It hurt. Just give your name, that’s a good start. She cleared her throat. “My name is Minako Arisato. My brother’s name is Minato, he, uh…” [break][break]
Even with everything going on her mind clung to her lighthearted nature, wanting to make a joke about how similar their names were or give anything to make the situation easier. But she held them back, knowing it wouldn’t do anything really, as well as not wanting to waste the time of the Detective. She took in a quick breath, going through the questions again and attempting to come up with something cohesive, something helpful. [break][break]
“He goes off on his own all the time, he’s always been a loner. He likes to study by himself, so I guess that’s where I assumed he was going when he left school that day. T-That’s where I saw him last, we were both leaving school and went our separate ways. We usually do, so it wasn’t unusual. He didn’t seem unhappy or upset or anything, everything seemed so normal.” [break][break]
Her tone emphasized the word, slight frustration spilling from it. Part of her wanted to blame herself, that she should have realized something was off and gone with him. But nothing was off. Replaying that moment over and over in her mind, it was something they did every day. A wave, and then off in different directions. Him telling her to stay out of trouble, like he always did. Tears pricked the corners of her gaze once more, threatening to slip down her cheeks no matter how hard she tried to hold them back. She should have done something, she should have gone with him. And now… now he was gone, and the Fool couldn’t even stop herself from crying.
